Ultimate Guide to the San Juan Cruise Port
San Juan is the door to the southern Caribbean for many popular cruise lines. It is the capital of Puerto Rico, a vibrant island that is welcoming, full of pride, and embraces its beautiful history.
If you’re starting or ending a cruise here, or it is a stop on a cruise itinerary, we’ll share all the details you need to explore the island, eat delicious authentic food, and enjoy the colorful, vibrant port of call.
Feel free to utilize the clickable Table of Contents below.
Let’s start with the details on the cruise port embarkation process and location (it’s quite different than others, so be sure to read through those details.)
📍 Where is the San Juan Cruise Port Located?
What’s the exact location of the San Juan cruise port?
The San Juan Cruise Port is located in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, and consists of two main areas:
- Old San Juan Piers: These are located right in the heart of the historic district. You’ll be right next to walkable streets, see colorful colonial buildings, and visit local shops and cafés. Most cruise ships port here. This is really useful if it’s a port of call!
- Address: Old San Juan Terminal,Paseo Gilberto Concepcion de Gracia San Juan, Puerto Rico 00901
- Pan American Pier: Located across the bay near the Puerto Rico Convention Center. It’s about a 5-10 minute drive from Old San Juan.
- Address: Pan American Terminal, Isla Grande San Juan, Puerto Rico 00901
Important: Your cruise line will determine your terminal. Cruise lines don’t always use the same pier for every sailing. Confirm with your cruise documents and look it up the day before in case of last-minute changes.
✈️ Arriving in San Juan Before Your Cruise

How early should you arrive in San Juan before your cruise?
I always recommend traveling to your cruise port at least a day early. Especially so if your port is on an island. Delays can happen, and once you miss the all-call time, you’ve missed it. The biggest benefit of having San Juan as your embarkation and/or ending port is that you have an extra port of call built into your cruise vacation.
🛬 Flying In
- Airport: Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU)
- Travel Time to Port: 20 minutes or less, depending on traffic and terminal location (but again, we recommend arriving early and staying overnight prior to your cruise.)
🚖 Transportation to the Cruise Port
- Uber: Available everywhere, this is what we used while in San Juan
- Taxi: Flat-rate pricing zones apply; confirm fare before you ride
- Rental Car: Not necessary, and parking isn’t the easiest, so I don’t recommend it
- Hotel Shuttle: Some offer cruise packages or private transfers
🏨 Where to Stay the Night Before
We dive into this in more detail in our [Where to Stay in San Juan Before or After Your Cruise] (coming soon!) guide, but here’s a short version:
- Old San Juan – charm, walkability, closest to the terminals
- Condado – modern, beachy vibes, plenty of walkable restaurants albeit a bit touristy
- Isla Verde – closer to airport, resort-style hotels, less walkable and the farthest from the ports (but still not very far, 20-30 minutes)
Hotels fill up fast during cruise season, so book early, especially for weekend departures.
🚢 What to Expect at the Cruise Terminal for Embarkation
The San Juan cruise terminals and embarkation process is much different than other ports. If you’re used to Port Canaveral, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale- this will be a really different experience.
Most importantly, there isn’t an indoor waiting area. At all. You’ll have a much easier time if you arrive at the port per your port arrival time that the cruise line assigns you. You can possibly get away with showing up a little bit early at other ports, but this port is very strict, and you will NOT be allowed early entry. If the weather is not great, you won’t have much relief, so be prepared.
🧳 Luggage
When you arrive, you’ll have to roll your luggage over some uneven pavement. They’ll usually have a pop-up canopy with cruise staff checking in luggage. You’ll need your luggage tags and room number. Have that on hand as soon as you’re there.
You can take a carry-on on board. Check with your cruise line for details on what you can and can’t bring on the ship.
👜 Carry-On Essentials:
Depending on your cruise line, your cabin may not be ready for several hours. Keep these in your day bag:
- Medications
- Chargers (these are lifesavers! here’s what I use)
- Change of clothes
- Swimwear (if you want to swim)
- Handheld fan!
Note: if you’re on Virgin Voyages (we love this line), your room will be ready when you board since they have later port arrival times and later departure times.
🛂 Entry to the Terminal/Check In
Before you enter the terminal for check in, they’ll check for proof of your port arrival time at the door. They’re very strict and you WILL NOT be let in even 5 minutes early.
Once it’s your time and are allowed entry, it’s a fairly run of the mill process. You’ll wait in line to have cruise documents, health forms, and passports checked. You’ll get your key card.
You’ll go through a security screening with metal detectors and luggage scanners.
Then it’s time to go right to the ship! No waiting.
Check with your cruise line for documents and health forms needed. They will always have the most up to date requirements.
⚓️ Embarkation Day Tips
How can you make embarkation in San Juan stress-free?
You’re already informed, that’s half the battle. Don’t rush the process- it makes it more overwhelming. Perhaps bring a small handheld fan 🥵.
✅ Do:
- Arrive at the terminal at your port arrival time assigned by your cruise line
- Have your luggage tags & room number ready when you arrive
- Have important medications handy
- Be prepared for some uneven pavement
- Dress light- humidity in San Juan can be intense
- Keep some low bills on hand to tip the porters
❌ Don’t:
- Assume your ship is at the same pier as prior cruises
- Leave valuable items like passports or medications in your luggage
- Arrive early- you’ll be standing outside
📦 Cruise Port Logistics and Need-to-Knows
Luggage Storage: There’s no luggage storage at the terminals. If you’re arriving early or staying post-cruise, ask your hotel or use services like Bounce.
Currency: U.S. dollars
Language: Primarily English, with plenty of Spanish speakers available.
Wi-Fi: Available, but it’s usually pretty jammed and slow due to the number of users. Download everything you need in advance and join the ship Wi-Fi as soon as you’re on.
